Friday Morning Mind Candy, and a Shoutout to the 20SB Crew

by Chase on April 2, 2010

No, he’s never written a book. But I do believe it’s safe to give Jon Foreman the slot as my favorite writer. He’s the only one I can think of who penned a lyric that literally knocked me off my feet (that’s quite a story, ask me to tell you sometime).

Recently(-ish), Jon’s been writing for The Huffington Post. His latest piece, Possessed by the Truth, is nothing short of brilliant. Calling all to find common ground, Jon reminded me of what I called The Art of Familiarity (back in my Taiwan-Drifting days). Jon takes this much further in his simple, eloquent, yet understated way.

The meal ticket:

“If the truths in this life have no owner then we are set free: free from the need to defend the truth, free to be possessed by this truth and simply live it out. Truth becomes much too large for me to possess; truth is the beauty and authenticity which possesses me.”

What would it mean if we accepted this? If Truth ceased – on all sides – to be something we fought to defend?

Anyways, there’s your Friday Morning Mind Candy.

One more thing.
To my dear 20sb friends:

If you haven’t noticed, for the last few weeks, the 20SB homepage has hosted my mug as the Staff Pick (of the month?). I’m way beyond honored, and if you found yourself here through that charming photo they chose, please say hi!

I would love to find out who wrote the review of my site. Hope you don’t mind that I saved it. Flattery will get you everywhere. If you care to come out of hiding, shoot me an email :) And Thanks. You’re too much, whoever you are.

And if it hasn’t been said, I seriously love the 20sb crew that’s made their way to this site through the year and a half of the Drift. I’ve made some great friends, and continue to be impressed by the quality of human beings that come out of that group. If you haven’t checked out the 20-Something Bloggers (and if you’re a blogger in your 20s) please do. You’ll thank me. And you might find the your most (un)flattering picture on their homepage frequented by their 11,000+ Members

Hey! So, I found myself here through that charming photo they chose to feature on 20sb. Hi!
I really like Jon Foreman too…x

Chase April 2, 2010 at 9:36 am

Rachel! Great to meetchya :)
Thanks for saying hi. And isn’t Foreman great? Do you have his solo stuff? Love it.
Hope you stick around :)

I didn’t write the review, but I chose the picture. I think it’s adorable! Unfortunately, I can’t tell you who wrote the review because we want the staff of “staff recommends” to stay a secret. If their identities were revealed, they’d be bombarded by people insincerely trying to get in their good books, you know? I’ll pass on your post though!

Chase April 2, 2010 at 5:56 pm

I had a sneaking suspicion that the Staff Member of “Staff Recommends” might remain anonymous…

Well thanks for passing along my note :) Love you guys. Anonymity and all.

Amogh April 3, 2010 at 1:08 am

well i didn’t recognize you at first (the pic. didn’t help) but then i read CHASE and i had a realization that i know this guy. i love reading your posts keep up the good work :)

Chase April 3, 2010 at 12:05 pm

Amogh! It’s great to have you around. Thanks for the encouragement. And secretly I’m glad I’m not super recognizable in that pic :)

Magpie April 5, 2010 at 8:48 am

I saw that; I was SO PROUD! And I also thought the pic was adorable, what are you talking about?!

I love 20-something bloggers….

Chase April 5, 2010 at 12:52 pm

haha, you’re too kind :)

I love me some 20sb-ers. Met too many cool kids (present company included) from that site.

cooper April 5, 2010 at 11:04 pm

That’s how I found you, and I’ve enjoyed reading some of your posts.

I’m glad they started that, because I really don’t get around to read many blogs, and the shout outs are helpful.

Chase April 6, 2010 at 8:35 pm

I’m with you, Cooper! Definitely helps me get to know some good bloggers. I’m glad you were able to find yourself here :)
Long live 20sb! :P

Cindy April 8, 2010 at 9:25 pm

haha it’s me Cindy from Taiwan.
because of my huge curiousity about if you are going to taiwan,so I read
all of stuff from your website.
Can you imagine…… haha it’s a lot of work , try if you can read a whole bolg in Chinese way ok…^_^
well, I feel little bit dissapointed ….will you going to move to Taiwan again?
hope you can say yes.when that days comes let me know ok.
by the way, the fort hays girls and me become “not bad” friends.
I can definitely say they don’t hate me anymore, they are cute, simple ,
afraid but look forward to go to hays,…..
we even will go for a dinner this sunday because of little celebration about Christy broke up with her ex-boyfriend. …..I can tell you if you wonder the story behind this.
at last, the girls are waiting the I-20 from Fort hays and preparing everything for moving to the united states, but the most important is
they pretty insist have couple days stop at L.A. Why? you are the only reason. so don’t forget that appointment …..probably at the August.
I will tell you the date once they get confirmed.^_^
see, I have relationship with them. wow…..
I guess that’s it..
see ya.

Maybe if I publicize the photo of me in Nana the Dog suit I’ll get on the 20sb front page too.. hmm…

re: Truth — not sure truth is really all that important, irrespective of who makes it/owns it/whatever. Knowledge is better. Truth is an internalisation of knowledge. What is true for one person might not be for another (and this is differentiated from ‘fact’, I guess…)

Anyway, tired and jumbled brain. I get the angle you’re coming from — I’ve just never been one for the whole SEEK THE TRUTH thing :)

Chase April 11, 2010 at 7:29 pm

I think in order to be “Possessed by the Truth” you would have to assume (or embrace) that there is some, yes.
Also, I do agree we should establish a definition for Truth before it’s discussed, and it’s a fair distinction to separate Truth from mere fact.

However I do have reservations against the notion that Truth differs from person to person. To say all Truth is relative is, quite frankly, a rather finite statement. That, in and of itself, is an absolute. So while I do feel deliberation must be done to decide what is Truth, to write it all off as subjective from person to person is hasty at best, and at worst: self refuting.

Emily Jane April 23, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Congrats on 20sb :) Truth is as important as knowledge, I think.
